The ceremony was held in the presence of Major General Pilot Ahmed bin Thani, Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Ports Affairs, Dubai Police, His Excellency Arthur Spyrou, Ambassador of Australia to the UAE and Mr Steve Chapman, Vice Chancellor of Edith Cowan University, Australia with other senior dignitaries from the Emirates Group and friends and families of the graduates in attendance.

The graduating class of 2016 comprised a total of 153 students from over 25 countries including 12 UAE nationals who graduated from the course as part of the Al Ruwaad programme for professional development developed by Emirates Group Security. The student cohort included both staff from the Emirates Group as well as external candidates. 121 students received university diplomas in aviation security management and 32 students graduated with university diplomas in aviation ground handling.

The university diplomas in aviation security management and ground handling are offered by the Centre of Aviation and Security Studies, the learning and development arm of Emirates Group Security, in partnership with Edith Cowan University from Perth, Australia. The part-time diploma programmes, recognised by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and awarded under the Australian and Commonwealth University guidelines, equip students with the specialist skills necessary to manage security needs and ground handling operations in the fast growing aviation industry.

Over the course of 18 months students are taken through a range of subjects in aviation security and ground handling including the legal framework of aviation security, threat assessment and management and aviation logistics. Students who complete the diploma programme also have the option to earn internationally recognised credit points for future courses of study with Edith Cowan University. Over 1500 students have received university diplomas in the two streams since the inception of the aviation security programme in 2003 and the ground handling programme in 2006.

Emirates Group Security and CASS are committed to developing a pool of qualified talent specialised in aviation security for the regional as well as global aviation industry. In addition to the diploma programmes, Emirates Group Security offers a number of short term training programmes for ground staff, aircrew and professionals from security and related industries.
